Why Dryer Vent Cleaning is Important

Why Dryer Vent Cleaning is Important

You can find a clothes dryer in most homes across the country. Do you ever really give it much thought though? You should! If you’re not properly maintaining your household clothes dryer, you are open to several associated risk factors. Outlined below are some of the most common issues when household dryers are not properly maintained.

It is a fire hazard

Dryer fires are among the leading causes of house fires in the United States. According to FEMA, 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year, and a staggering 34% of those are caused by failure to clean the dryer vent. Dryers work at extremely high temperatures and can cause the back up of lint to combust and ignite a fire. Hundreds of injuries and even deaths could be prevented by conducting regular maintenance on your dryer.

It wastes energy

While the lint trap catches a good amount of the lint created with each load, it doesn’t catch everything. As each load passes, more and more tiny lint particles accumulate in the dryer vents and pipes, causing your dryer to lack in efficiency. Excess lint in the trap and the lint pipe don’t allow the hot air to flow freely through to dry your clothes. When the dryer vent is clogged, it takes extra time to dry the load. The extra time that your dryer is operating is using electricity and causes a spike in your monthly bill.

It is a health hazard

The lint that is trapped in the dryer pipe is continuously exposed to moisture causing it to be a breeding ground for mold. When the dryer is turned on, it stirs everything up and puts those mold spores into the air that your family is breathing causing health issues. Additionally, if you have a dryer that is gas operated, you risk having carbon monoxide leaking into your home causing even more health issues. As a side note, if you do have a gas operated dryer, be sure to have your connections checked annually.

How to care for your dryer

You should clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry. Have a professional clean your dryer vent pipe quarterly. If it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry, do it more often. Don’t ever run your dryer without the lint trap or with a lint trap that is clogged. Be sure anything you put in the dryer is a  dryer-safe material.
